Title
Copper Alloy Iron Age Toggle with Enamel Inlay
Description
English: A corroded and incomplete cast copper alloy loop fastener with inlaid enamel, dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman periods, c. 1st century BC-2nd century AD. Probably Wild Type VIa, which dates to c. 2nd century AD. The decorative end of the toggle is in the form of a sub-rectangular panel (15.58mm wide x 17.00mm long x 2.46mm thick) with slightly rounded corners. The panel is divided with a plain long cross to make four equally-sized sub-rectangular recesses. These recesses were originally inlaid with enamel which now only survive in two diametrically opposed corners. Two empty cells hold traces of either paste or some residual lighter coloured enamel, possibly white or yellow; remains of the nearly complete inlaid panels suggests that the original colour would have been red. An integral tapering shaft protrudes from the undecorated reverse surface of the panel at an approximate 80-degree angle for 12 mm before turning at a right angle to run parallel with the panel. At this point the shaft forms an open triangle with the base end forming the attachment end of the fastener. The metal of the fastener is of a mottled dark green colour. Cf. Wild 1970, Fig 2, Type VIa, pp 141-142.
