Title |
Copper-alloy toilet implement, possible ear scoop |
||
Description |
English: This copper-alloy artefact is likely to be an item from a toilet set such as an ear scoop, cosmetic spatula or medical implement (ligula) of Roman date. The stem has a circular cross section, 1.66mm in diameter, which is broken transversely approximately 37.90mm from the surviving terminal end. The surviving terminal end is a flattened area 5.22mm wide, 0.56mm thick and at least 6.64mm in length however the outer edge is damaged to some extent. The length of the artefact is c.48.0mm. The terminal end bends over at an angle of about 45 degrees. The lower edge of the flattened terminal is plain but upper surface might be decorated by a single dot, however it is unclear whether this is deliberate decoration or an accidentally punched mark caused through later damage. See Crummy, N. 1983, vol. 2, p60, fig.64, items 1897, 1899, 1900, 1901 & 1907, Bishop, M.C. 1996, p.36-7, fig.20, items 205-207. |
