Title |
Copper-alloy Incomplete Spectacle Buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of Post-Medieval date. The buckle is of a double looped frame type, also referred to as a spectacle buckle. Just over half of the frame survives however the pin is missing. The frame has a sub-rectangular or sub-'D'-shaped cross section due to the moulded foliate detail on the upper surface. The central bar has a 'D'-shaped section and is 2.23mm thick and 2.29mm wide at the centre. The outer edge of the frame above and below the central bar has a slight knop that accommodates part of the moulded design which comprises of a fleur de lis at these two points of the frame. The width of the frame at the central bar, from knop to knop is 28.73mm. The frame expands on the inner and outer edge (vesica shaped) at the end of the frame to accommodate a large moulded flower. It is likely that the missing end of the frame would have been formed in an identical style. The buckle fragment has a length of c.30mm and the original length can be estimated to have been c.22.74mm. The frame is 2.45mm thick and weighs 4.97g. The date range is c.1550-1650.
