Title |
Copper-alloy Incomplete Nail Cleaner |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete leaf-shaped nail cleaner from a Roman toilet set. The attachment loop has a curved top and circular perforation of 3.07mm. The loop is 1.75mm thick and lays in the same plane as the shaft. The loop and shaft are separated by two moulded reels spaced 2.75mm apart. These reels have a diameter of 5.75mm and are 2.40mm thick (upper reel) and 2.35mm (lower reel) thick. The spaces between the reels also have a circular cross section. The upper reel is separated from the attachment loop by 1.38mm (diameter 3.33mm). The space between the two reels is a length of 2.84mm (diameter 2.83mm). The lower reel is separated from the shaft by 1.66mm (diameter 3.89mm). The top of the shaft has a width of 14.68mm and is 1.94mm thick. The shaft survives to an incomplete length of 14.39mm at which point an irregular transverse break has occurred. The shaft has a rectangular cross section. The top of the shaft is oval in shape below which emerges a rectangle, 7.95mm wide that tapers towards the break. The artefact, if not broken, would have continued to taper to two points separated by a central 'V' shaped notch. From the apex of this notch a shallow incised groove runs up towards the attachment loop stopping 5.00mm below the top of the shaft. Evidence for a central groove can only be see on one side of the artefact, suggesting that the other side is likely to have been undecorated. Weight is 2.63g, total incomplete length is 31.08mm, width is 14.68mm. This nail cleaner fits type 2b of Crummy's typology and is believed to date from the second and probably third centuries", See Crummy, N. p.58 & 62, fig.67, no.1941. |
