Title
Copper-Alloy Shoe Buckle
Description
English: Rectangular copper alloy Post-Medieval two-piece shoe buckle frame. The buckle has slightly concave ends. The frame width increases slightly on the inner edges at the central aspect of concave bend. On the upper surface of one of these concave ends at the centre, is a small grove c2mm wide. It would seem likely that this groove acted as a pin rest. There is a single transverse knop over each of the spindle holes, which are placed centrally along the upper and lower edges of the frame. To either side of the knops are six ridges, on the upper surface, which radiate out and away from where the central spindle bar would have been. The frame is curved in shape to fit over the foot. Dimensions: length 40.40mm, width 25.01mm, maximum thickness 6.00mm, weight 10.64g. The spindle holes have a diameter of 1.87mm. For a similar example see Whitehead, R. 2003 p.102, item 654 and to a lesser extent item 657.
