Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Copper
Locality: Quincy Mine, Hancock, Houghton County, Michigan, USA (Locality at mindat.org)
This is a VERY large and dramatic specimen of one of the great US classics: copper in and on calcite crystals from the old copper districts of the Upper Peninsula. It has real presence and a deep color to it that, combined with the aesthetics of how it has been trimmed for display, really pack a punch and give you a lot of value for your money in one of these (in my opinion, anyhow!). The crystal measures a full 3 INCHES in height, is symmetrically formed, and is complete all around except for a small bit of contact in the lower rear face and a few very trivial spots of cleavage at some of the faces to the periphery. The crystal is anchored firmly to, and in fact enveloping the top of, the matrix. Interestingly, bits of leaf copper actually STICK OUT OF this crystal, and are not simply confined as usual to hanging out internally! A MAJOR specimen! Comes with custom-made lucite display base. The Cranbrook label with the Pollard donation is key here. Captain Joseph Pollard was active in the Keweenaw in the 19th century, having arrived from Cornwall in 1858. He worked from 1860-1910 at Clumet and Hecla. The collection remained intact and on display in the family home for over 70 years, until his grandsons Dan and Dean Pollard donated his collection to Cranbrook on July 12, 1984, in memory of their grandfather. 10.5 x 8.3 x 4 cm
