| Description | This vacant 19th Century farmhouse has stood rotting away for several decades along Cope Creek, just to the southeast of Sylva. Once a very common type of house in the rural farmsteads in this part of Appalachia, the rapid rise in wealth during the 20th Century led to the construction of many newer homes with less adaptations to the local climate, due to their inclusion of central heating, air conditioning, and electricity. When I was a kid, the house had items on the now-collapsed porch that dated to the 1960s and 1970s, the last period of habitation. It’s sad to see this decay and vacancy in an area that is growing rapidly, but there’s very little will for or means of preserving these old wooden homes, especially ones in such a state of severe disrepair as this one is. |
