Summary
[edit]DescriptionCoombes Church - geograph.org.uk - 1012099.jpg |
English: Coombes Church Of unknown dedication and currentlyclosed whilst undergoing restoration to replace the rotting timbers that held up the roof. A church existed here during the Saxon period though in the main dates from the early 12th century with some additions up to the 16th century when the church's remoteness meant it was by and large left alone. The bell dates from around 1150 and has recently been repaired to allow it to work again marking it the oldest church bell in Sussex still in use. Inside frescos were discovered in 1949 and have been painstakingly restored, they too date from the mid to late 12th century and were believed to be have been done by the same group of artists who painted the inside of Hardham and Clayton churches. |
