to the effects of the plantations, I leave toscientific men to determine.^ It seems very probable that the effects abovedescribed are due to the eucalyptus havingsuch extensive and far-spreading roots, whichsuck up and appropriate the moisture of thesurrounding soil, the presence of which, aidedby heat, giving rise to vegetable decomposi-tion, is believed to be the cause of malarialpoisoning. The avidity of the plant for water is very great;it has been computed that one tree will absorbten times its weight of moisture from the soil.^It is most likely owing, at any rate in verylarge measure, to this cause, rather than to thesupposed antiseptic and disinfecting odoursexhaled by its leaves, that the salubriouseffects of the eucalyptus are due. The bluegum tiee, or Eucalyptus globulus (so distin-guished because of the rounded form of thelid which covers its unexpanded flower bud),has been successfully introduced into Asia, 1 Bentlej. a Pliarin. If, as asserted,it can only exist in a climate where the tem-perature is never lower than the freezingpoint, its domestication (save in hot-houses) isimpossible in our own country. The Eucalyptus globulus is a very rapidly-growing tree, and attains to great proportions. In some cases it has been known to attain the colossal dimensions of 350 feet in heightand a 100 in circumference.^ This magnitude is entirely out of proportionto the size of the seed, which is very minute ; sominute that it has been computed one poundweight of the seed could produce 162,000trees. Various preparations of the leaves and1 Bentley. C72 EUCHLORINE—EUPYRION bark of the eucalypti have been introducedinto medicine, which will be found under therespective pharmaceutical preparations. Theywere asserted to be specially serviceable in in-termittent fevers and bronchitis. The ideathat their efficacy in the former class
