e nat. ord. Euphorbiacece. Kamala is im-ported from India, where it is known underthe name of kameela. The rottlera, fromwhich it is obtained, is a tree from 15 to 20feet in height, indigenous to India and tomany of the East Indian Islands. Kamala has long been employed in India asa remedy for tapeworm, and within the lastfew years has been given for the same purposein this country with very general success. Itmay be administered in doses of from thirtygrains to three drachms, suspended in water,rubbed up with mucilage, or mixed with syrup.In large doses, such as three drachms, it some-times purges violently. After the third orfourth motion the worm is generally evacuateddead. A second dose may be taken in aboutfour hours should the first fail to act; or in-stead of a second dose, some castor oil may begiven. Kamala is also used externally by thenatives of India in various skin complaints,particularly in scabies. It is also said to haveproved useful in herpetic ringv\ jrm. 59 930 JUTE

KAOLIN—KERMES 931 Dr Anderson obtained from the resinouscol luring matter, which is the principal con-stituent of kamala, a yellow crystalline sub-stmice, to which he gave the name rottlerin.The existence of rottlerin has since been con-firmed by Mr Groves, who found that itbecomes changed by exposure, a circumstanceto which he attributes its non-detection in oldspecimens of the drug, and to which may veryreasonably be attributed Leubes failure tofind it. The British Pharmacopoeia ascribes thefollowing characters to kamala:—A finegran-ular mobile powder, of a brick-red colour;it is with difiiculty mixed with water, butwhen boiled with alcohol the greater part isdissolved, forming a red solution. Ether dis-solves most of it, the residue consisting prin-cipally of tufted hairs. It should be free fromsand or earthy impurities.
