Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, warm-season, perennial, erect, hairless to nearly hairless herb. Stems are unbranched and to 80 cm tall (usually shorter). Leaves are narrow, spirally arranged and the margins are curved downwards. Flowerheads are narrow panicles with small heads (3-4 mm long) that have red to purple tipped hairless (or nearly so) bracts that surround each head. Flowering is mostly in summer and autumn. A native of South America, it is a weed of disturbed pastures, roadsides, cultivation and wasteland. An indicator of disturbance and poor competition. Usually a minor weed, which is most likely to be abundant after flooding. Controlled with dense competitive pastures. Herbicides are registered for its control.
