| Description |
English: Converted pillbox. This pillbox (Type FW3/23) with red brick shuttering was erected in 1940/41 as part of the coastal crust defences. In 1993 it was converted into a bird watcher's observatory; the wooden facade on the east side was added during this time. Defence of Britain database ID: S0001054. In an effort to prevent an anticipated German invasion, a network of defences, the most common being so-called pillboxes, was constructed in 1940 at strategic points, along rivers and canals, as well as along the coast and on airfields. It is estimated that less than 6,000 of a total of 28,000 pillboxes still survive. http://www.pillboxesuk.co.uk/ |
