THE APPLC-GRAIN APHIS, Aphids Injurious to Orchard Fruits, Etc. 13 THE WOOLLY APPLE APHIS.1 Tho woolly applo aphis is often in evidence in summer on thotrunk, branches, and twigs of tho applo as bluish-White cottonypatches (fig. 8) which hido tho rusty or purplish brown aphidsbeneath. While principally injurious to tho roots of tho apple, itsinjurios abovo ground aro at times quito important. In orchardsgrown under arid or somi-arid conditions in tho West it is decidedlymoro troublosomo than in tho East, attacking tho treo wherever thobark is tender and sometimes infesting tho stems of tho loaves andfruit. Its injurios abovo ground often result in galls or swellingssimilar to thoso on tho roots, and when tho fruit spurs aro invadedtho fruiting capacity of tho tree may bo interfered with seriously.
