te plans for raising funds for the Statesrepresentation at the Exposition. Shortly after this Com-mission was appointed the date for opening the Expositionwas changed to May 1st, 1904, and the members took nodecisive action. In his Message to the Eighth Legislative Assembly, whichconvened in January, 1903, the Governor recommended thatthe sum of $35,000.00 be appropriated to enable Montana totake part in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and in theLewis and Clark Centennial Exposition at Portland, Oregon,to be held later in 1905. The House of Representatives of the Eighth LegislativeAssembly passed a Bill appropriating the sum named by theGovernor. In the Senate the Bill was amended by addingthe names of five prominent citizens to constitute the Com-mission, whose duty should be to take charge of the Statesinterests in the two Expositions. The House of Representa-tives refused to concur in the Senate Amendment namingthe Commmission, and the Bill failed on the last night of thesession.
