Summary

[edit]
Description

The building just behind the backhoe is one of my favourites. It needs a wikipedia article. It was built over one hundred years ago, as a hotel. It also, I believe, served as a school. There was a diner on the main floor, with 1950s style fittings. I always meant to go in there.

About five years ago almost all the industrial buildings east of here were torn down to prepare for a 20,000 unit housing development. I guess that stripped the diner of customers, and it closed.

Up close the red bricks of many of these old buildings are heavily weathered. Painted bricks look odd and old fashioned. But, apparently, many older bricks weren't robust enough to withstand weathering, and actually need to be painted. There are some other downtown building where the owner obviously hired someone to sandblast the paint off, and ended up with a horror show, where flecks of paint remained, but an inch of brick had been stripped away.
