Summary
[edit]DescriptionConsole 01 (IMG 2152).jpg |
English: Console 1. Siren with forked tail.
It is the first console to the right of the east portal. Christine Smith. The Pisa Baptistery (Garland Press, 1978), pp. 99, 161-162, fig. 153: Console 1 shows a siren holding the ends of her forked tail [Denise Jalabert, "De l'art oriental antique à l'art roman. II. Les sirènes", Bulletin Monumental, t. XCV, pp. 433-471]. The facial type - slightly pursed lips , high cheekbones and deeply drilled pupils - is exactly that which appears on capital 11. Also similar is the use of rows of drill-dots to outline form or simply to add texture and pattern to hair, the area under the arms, or in the leaf base. The siren occupies all of the space on the face of the console, and her form is perfectly adapted to it: her curling tails spread out and over the curved part of the console. |

The Grove Encyclopedia of Medieval Art and Architecture, Òîì 1, Pisa, p. 36: https://books.google.ru/books?id=FtlMAgAAQBAJ&pg=RA4-PA36 The earliest important sculptural decorations on the baptistery can be dated to the final decades of the 12th century; it comprises the capitals of the four piers and eight columns of the interior, and the twelve corbels on which the roof of the circular nave rests. This scheme, including decorative leaves and branches, real and fantastic animals , and scenes (e.g. of hunters or acrobats), constitutes unified whole thanks to a group of sculptors whose style is similar to that of Guidetto, who is associated with various works in Lucca. |
