Description

Conservation programs of the Farm Bill have resulted in a place to rest for migrating Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese in Hanson County, SD.

Soil Conservationist Tamara Sommer, with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Mitchell, SD, spotted the activity on this wetland and adjacent upland habitat while she was out in the field in Hanson County, SD. Managing vegetation, and in particular, ensuring the establishment of native grasses is important for a healthy, well-balanced habitat. The photo was taken on April 2, 2015.

This particular property was enrolled in NRCS' Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) of the 2008 Farm Bill. The 2014 Farm Bill has new easement options similiar to the previous WRP. Landowners interested in easement options should inquire about the ACEP--Agricultural Conservation Easements Program, at their local office of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
