ightand won it after all the original parties to the suit were intheir graves. The litigation was pending lift) years, and isone of the celebrated cases in Virginia jurisprudence. JohnMarshall, afterwards chief-justice of the United States, was one of the attorneys for Ilite. Marriages occurredbetween members of his family and other historical Virginiafamilies, notably with the Madisons and Clarks,* and thelatter may have had some influence in inducing his Bow-man grandsons and Ruddell to go with George RogersClark in the Illinois campaign. *The wife of his son Jacob was the sister of Colonel James Madison, father ofthe president of the United States of that name; and the sister of the presidentwas the wife of Jost Ilites grandson, Major Isaac Hite, of Bell Grove, Virginia; andhis granddaughter, Sarah Ilite, was the wife of General Jonathan Clark, a colonelin the War of the Revolution, and eldest brother of George Rogers Clark. Therewere also other marriage connections with the Clarks.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE BOWMANS AND THEIR ANCESTORS. II5 Jost Hite built his first house near a spring, whose re-freshing waters continue to flow now as when he found itin the wilderness over 160 years ago. This house was ofstone, so constructed on the side of a gently-sloping hill, and partially built into it, that one could go directly intothe upper story from the high ground, and then, by goingdown stairs, come out of the lower story on the low grounda few feet from the spring. The lower story was, nodoubt, the general utility part, while the upper was usedfor living purposes. The walls were of stone and thick, but the roof had fallen in, and it was comparatively inruins when the author visited it in 1891. It was probablybuilt between 1732 and 1735. It is certain that his son John built a stone mansion alittle further up this sloping ground in 1753. The fact thatit was erected by him that year is plainly shown by theinscription J. H., 1753, cut in the bulls eye stone inthe gable of the house. Kercheval
