Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cartoon c. 1866 addressing the defeated South's resistance to the pending post war amendments which would declare equal rights for African Americans. Depicts a doctor's office where the seated "Dr. North" counsels "Patient South" who stands before him with his arm in a sling. He proposes that after the removal of the South's legs the "Constitutional Amendment" peg leg which rests on his desk will support him well. The South states that he "Can't See it." Beside the doctor a young African-American crouches. Behind the desk stands a bookshelf labeled "Congressional Surgery, Legislative Quackery" where a skull and a bottle of "Black Draught" are displayed. P.8698
