Summary

[edit]
Description

Concretion from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA. (~12.2 cm across at its widest)

This is a calcium carbonate (limestone) concretion that was hosted in mudshale. The medium to dark gray area is a crack surface showing the unweathered appearance of the concretion interior. The dirty yellowish-colored material on much of the rest of the rock is limonite staining produced by weathering. Limonite is a hydrous iron hydroxy-oxide mineral. The two prominent ridges (extending from upper right to lower left) are calcite-filled fractures. Many concretions have experienced fracturing, followed by mineralization in the fractures. This process may be repeated many times and can be referred to as "crack-and-heal" - the ridges are healed fractures.

Stratigraphy: talus from the lower Pottsville Group (apparently from a little below the Poverty Run Limestone), upper Morrowan Stage, upper Lower Pennsylvanian

Locality: loose piece from Trinway West 0 Outcrop - roadcut on the northern side of Rt. 16, immediately west of the Rt. 16-Rt. 60 intersection, southern side of the eastern end of Irish Ridge, northern Cass Township, northwestern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (40° 09’ 22.48” North latitude, 82° 02’ 03.32” West longitude)
