1858) Springfield Speech 155 Speech at Springfield, Illinois, July 17, 1858 FELLOW-CITIZENS: Another election,which is deemed an important one, isapproaching; and, as I suppose, the Re-publican party will without much difficulty electtheir State ticket. But in regard to the legisla-ture, we, the Republicans, labor under some dis-advantages. In the first place, we have a leg-islature to elect upon an apportionment of therepresentation made several years ago, when theproportion of the population was far greater inthe South (as compared with the North) thanit now is; and inasmuch as our opponents holdalmost entire sway in the South, and we a cor-respondingly large majority in the North, thefact that we are now to be representee! as wewere years ago, when the population was differ-ent, is to us a very great disadvantage.
