The whole originated in mistake.You know by the conversation with me that Ithought the establishment of the paper unfor-tunate, but I always expected to throw no obsta-cle in its way, and to patronize it to the extentof taking and paying for one copy. When thepaper was brought to my house, my wife saidto me, Now are you going to take anotherworthless little paper? (857) Springfield Speech 315 Speech in Springfield, Illinois, June 26,1857^ FELLOW-CITIZENS: I am here to-night, partly by the invitation of someof you, and partly by my own inclina-tion. Two weeks ago Judge Douglas spokehere on the several subjects of Kansas, theDred Scott decision, and Utah. I listened tothe speech at the time, and have the report of itsince. It was intended to controvert opinionswhich I think just, and to assail (politically,not personally) those men who, in common withme, entertain those opinions. For this reasonI wished then, and still wish, to make some an-swer to it, which I now take the opportunity ofdoing. I begin with Utah.
