I have heard some things from New York;and if they are true, one might well say of yourparty there, as a drunken fellow once said whenhe heard the reading of an indictment for hog-stealing. The clerk read on till he got to andthrough the words, did steal, take, and carryaway ten boars, ten sows, ten shoats, and tenpigs, at which he exclaimed, Well, by golly,that is the most equally divided gang of hogs Iever did hear of! If there is any other gangof hogs more equally divided than the Demo-crats of New York are about this time, I havenot heard of it. He spoke in a clearand cool, and very eloquent manner, for an hourand a half, carrying the audience with him inhis able arguments and brilliant illustrations—only interrupted by warm and frequent ap-plause.
