27, 1862 Executive Mansion,Washington, September 26, 1862. Major John J. Key. Sir: I am informed that in answer to thequestion, Why was not the rebel army baggedimmediately after the battle near Sharpsburg?propounded to you by Major Levi C. Turner,judge-advocate, etc., you answered, That is notthe game. The object is that neither army shallget much advantage of the other, that both shallbe kept in the field till they are exhausted, whenwe will make a compromise and save slavery.I shall be very happy if you will, within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this, prove to meby Major Turner that you did not, either liter-ally or in substance, make the answer stated. Major Turner says: As I remem-ber it, the conversation was: I asked the ques-tion why we did not bag them after the battleof Sharpsburg. Major Keys reply was, Thatwas not the game; that we should tire the rebelsout and ourselves. That that was the only waythe Union could be preserved. We must cometogether fraternally, and slavery be saved.On cross-examination Major Turner says he hasfrequently heard Major Key converse in regardto the present troubles, and never heard himutter a sentiment unfavorable to the maintenanceof the Union. He has never uttered anythingwhich he (Major T.) would call disloyalty.The particular conversation detailed was a pri-vate one. A. Lincoln. Indorsed on the above is: In my view it is wholly inadmissible for anygentleman holding a military commission fromthe United States to utter such sentiments asMajor Key is within proved to have done.Therefore let Major John J.
