Now let us takewhat is called an abolition State—the Republi-can, slavery hating State of New Hampshire—and see how many mulattoes we can find in herborders. The number amounts to just one hun-dred and eighty-four. In the Old Dominion—in the Democratic and aristocratic State of Vir- 35^ Abraham Lincoln gin I a—there were a few more mulattoes than thecensus-takers found in New Hampshire. Howmany do you suppose there were? Seventy-ninethousand seven hundred and seventy-five—•twenty-three thousand more than there were inall the free States! In the slave States therewere in 1850, three hundred and forty-eightthousand mulattoes—all of home production;and in the free States there were less than sixtythousand mulattoes,—and a large number ofthem were imported from the South.
