Title |
Complete slightly bent silver bodkin (head-dress pin). |
||
Description |
English: Complete, slightly bent silver bodkin (head-dress pin). The overall shape of the bodkin is an elongated rectangle in plan and sub-rectangular in section, with slightly convex sides and tapers towards a pointed terminal end, the last 25mm of which is bent 90° from the rest of the shaft. The bodkin has two openings, one at the wider end which is circular and 2mm in diameter. The other opening is approximately 10mm further along the shaft and is longitudinal and 12mm long by 2mm wide. The initials EC are incised on one face of the bodkin below the longitudinal opening. On the opposite face a little lower is a punched mark, probably GW, which is likely to be a makers mark. The bodkin is otherwise undecorated. This bodkin has been dated, in line with similar examples to the seventeenth century, c.1600-1700.
Similar to SF-B180B5, WILT-9C13B5 and CORN-943711 CORN-73B0C5. These headdress pins or bodkins are most often decorated [see BUC-6A6E01, 2006T462, from near Buckingham and now in the Bucks County Museum: AYBCM 2007.199.1] and end in a spoon shaped terminal, whereas this pin is undecorated and has no terminal. However the Milton Keynes pin and the Buckingham one share a similar maker's mark and so may be of similar dates i.e. 1600-1700. Dimensions: Length 96mm; Width 4mm, Thick 2mm; Weight 5.97g |
