Complete silver thimble of sixteenth or seventeenth century date (AD 1500 – AD 1700). |
||
Description |
English: Complete silver thimble of sixteenth or seventeenth century date (AD 1500 – AD 1700). Length: 18mm. Weigh 4.12g. The weight includes soil within the thimble. Treasure case no. 2005 T204 Although complete, this thin walled thimble is damaged and crumpled. It as a narrow plain un-thickened rim divided from the indented wall by a thin line of pellets. The wall has nine horizontal rows of shallow circular punched indentations. Interspersed between each row is a line of smaller but similar indentations. The crown has sixteen rows of shallow circular and sub-square indentations. A decorative panel on the lower part of the wall depicts a scene of two beasts with outstretched wings and heads facing each other. Between the beasts are other elements which are un-determinate due to wear. Crude graffiti within the worn area consists of a capital “S” and another probable but unidentifiable letter. |
