Title
Complete double oval-looped cast copper alloy buckle frame with an incomplete copper alloy buckle plate. Post Medieval (AD 1600 – AD 1700).
Description
English: Complete double oval-looped cast copper alloy buckle frame with an incomplete copper alloy buckle plate. Post Medieval (AD 1600 – AD 1700). Length 45mm, width 29mm and 6mm thick. Weight 13.52g.

The loops are identical in plan and semi-circular in cross-section. Each of the outer edges is slightly wider than the sides of the frame. The frame is 45mm in length and 29mm in width. The pin bar is circular in cross-section, about 2,5mm in diameter. At either end of the bar is a small knop. The bar is offset and narrowed and the pin is missing. Midway along the bar is an area of iron staining, indicating perhaps, that the missing pin was made of iron. The frame is decorated on its upper surface with a moulded, foliate design, now worn and mostly illegible. The buckle plate has a surviving length of 31mm and has a maximum width of 15mm at the fold. The leaves are just over 1.0mm in thickness. It has a relatively large rectangular pin slot which measures 8.5mm in length and 4.5mm in width. The sides of the plate are cusped so that in plan, it is roughly hour-glass shaped, although the attachment end of each plate leaf has old breaks. Near the attachment end, at the centre, is a small rivet hole which penetrates each plate leaf. This rivet hole is 1.6mm in diameter and has iron staining around the hole of each leaf. The front face of the plate is decorated with a moulded, foliate design and the reverse of the frame and plate is plain. Although corroded in places, a mid-green patina has survived. In the recess formed at the join between each loop and the pin bar on the upper surface there are traces of tinning. The buckle may have been associated with a sword belt.
