Title |
Complete corroded and damaged copper alloy thimble of probable Late Medieval or Early Post Medieval date (AD 1400 - AD 1600). |
||
Description |
English: Complete corroded and damaged copper alloy thimble of probable Late Medieval or Early Post Medieval date (AD 1400 - AD 1600). Length 20mm, thickness of walls about 0.5mm. Weight 5.69g. The walls of the thimble are torn and flattened and it is difficult to give precise details due to wear and corrosion. The rim is plain and un-thickened and does not appear to have a maker’s mark. The sides slope inwards towards the rounded top. There are about 12-14 spiral turns of circular indentations, irregular in size, that spiral from the rim towards the top in a clockwise direction. The turns may perhaps have continued to the apex, so that the top was not bare. |
