Title
Complete cast copper alloy thimble of probable Medieval date (AD 1350 - AD 1450).
Description
English: Complete cast copper alloy thimble of probable Medieval date (AD 1350 - AD 1450). Length 15.5mm, maximum diameter, at the rim, 18mm and about 1.0mm thick. Weight 6.17g.

The thimble does not have a thickened rim and the walls slope evenly inwards. The sides have vertical lines of 11-13 sub-circular indentations and the upper part of the walls have 4-5 horizontal lines of sub-circular indentations similar to those on the lower part of the walls. The domed top is bare of indentations and has a large central indentation. The sub-circular indentations on the walls appear to have been hand punched. There are two diametrically opposed notches cut into the rim; the purpose of these notches is uncertain, but they may have been designed to hold the thimbles in place while being finished on a lathe (Holmes 1998, 9).

The thimble is in a remarkably good condition and has an even mid-green patina overall. The inner surface is particularly shiny.
