Title
Complete and corroded copper alloy sewing ring of probable sixteenth century date (AD 1500 – AD 1600).
Description
English: Complete and corroded copper alloy sewing ring of probable sixteenth century date (AD 1500 – AD 1600). Length 19.5, lower diameter 25mm, upper diameter 18mm and 1.0mm thick. Weight 10.45g.

The rim is very thick and appears to have been tinned on its outer surface. It is undecorated and does not appear to have a maker’s mark. However, it does have a very small circular indentation. Which may be related to a production technique. The thin walled sides taper towards the open end. Circular indentations are arranged in a spiral with 8-9 turns revolving in a clockwise direction from the rim upwards. The indentations vary in size and are not very evenly spaced. None of the indentations have pierced the thimble. The thimble has a vertical line of solder through the rim and also through the full length of the wall. This solder is the same colour as that of the material coating the rim. The metal is a reddish colour with small patches of active bronze disease. Probably hand-made.
