Title
Complete Neolithic chipped, ground and polished stone axe made from Borrowdale Volcanic Tuff.
Description
English: Complete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (4500 BC-2000 BC).Length 198mm, width 77mm and 35mm thick. Weight 798g.

Although the axehead has been polished overall, three stages in its manufacture are evident. Around the butt, flake scars remain from when the axehead was in the form of a "rough-out". Most of the upper half is pitted as a result of the rough surfaces having been "pecked" to acquire the approximate shape prior to the final stage of polishing. The polishing process has removed all traces of the peck marks from the lower portion of the blade.
Viewing the axehead in plan, it is almost symmetrical. From the rounded butt, which is about 35mm in width, the sides flare outwards and downwards towards the cutting edge. Each side is evenly convex throughout its length. One side is slightly longer than the other side and this anomaly gives the gently curved cutting edge a lop-sided appearance. On one side of the blade adjacent to the cutting edge is a flake scar in the form of a conchoidal fracture. The cutting edge has minor chips along its full length. These chips as well as the flake scar appear to have been created when the implement was in use. The blade is very evenly polished. However, on the side with the flake scar there are a number of transverse polished facets near the cutting edge. These facets are difficult to display photographically.
Viewing the axehead from the side, the edges are flat and where the edges meet each face, the corners are rounded. The implement has slight curvature throughout its length when viewed from the side.
In the opinion of the recorder, the stone from which the axehead is made is a grey tuff of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series and is a product of one of the Lake District Neolithic axe factories, possibly Pike o' Stickle in Great Langdale
