Description
English: Common spangle galls on oak. There are four different kinds of spangle gall encountered on oak leaves in Britain; each is caused by a gall wasp of the genus Neuroterus. The galls shown in this photo are those of Neuroterus quercusbaccarum, which have "a flat disc with raised central mound and no rim; yellow-green with red or orange-brown hairs in tufts over whole surface" [Redfern and Askew, "Plant Galls" (Naturalists' Handbook 17), 1992]. For more details of the wasp's life-cycle, see: 1336489. Compare: 929338.
