Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dead soldier, near Flers, France, during World War I. A dead German soldier lying in the bottom of a trench, beside the entrance to a dugout. An Allied soldier is looking out from the dugout. The tins and water can in the foreground may have been thrown out of the dugout. It was quite common for soldiers to loot a few 'souvenirs'.

Flers, which was dramatically taken by the Allies in 1916, was hailed as a great victory. In retrospect it was clear that the gains were not consolidated. It was, however, one of the first attacks using tanks and infantry together.
