Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Primates; Family: Cercopithecidae; Genus: Semnopithecus; Genus species: Semnopithecus entellus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 41-78 cm; Weight: 5.4-23.6 kg; Identification: The common langur has either gray or gray-brown fur tinged with yellow. It has a whitish crown, underparts, and tail tip. Some populations have a crest on the crown; Habitat: Forests, scrub, farmlands, urban areas; Diet: Omnivore: leaves, seeds, nuts, fruit, grain, sap, insect larvae; Reproduction: Breeding takes place every other year. Females carry their offspring for 200 days before giving birth. The usual age for weaning is 8-10 months; Social Structure: Common langurs travel in groups of 15-25 animals. They are either stable, mixed groups or all male groups; Behavior: Largely arboreal, common langurs are also often found near temples; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Common langurs have a mutually beneficial relationship with chital: they sit in trees, feeding on leaves, and the unused portions fall to the ground where chital can feed upon them.
