itsunsurpassed powers of flight enable it to capture.Indeed, chimney swifts eat nothing but insects, andno insect that flies is safe from them, unless it be toolarge for them to swallow. In June swifts may beseen gathering twigs for nest material. They disdainto pick these up from the ground but seize the covetedtwig with their strong feet and break it off from theterminal branch when in full flight. By means of asticky saliva secreted for the purpose the swiftglues these twigs to the sides of the chimney in theform of a shallow nest. Although not generallyknown, swifts roost in chimneys and cling to thewalls by using the sharp pointed tail as a prop, asdo many woodpeckers in ascending trees. Any birdlover may secure distinction by solving an ornitho-logical riddle and telling us where our chimneyswifts spend the winter. They come in spring, theygo in fall and at present that is about all we know ofthe matter, save that they do not hibernate inhollow trees, as many have believed. 525
