numbering them, but itsslate-colored plumage and white tail feathers revealits presence unmistakably. Its familiar tsip, maybe easily recognized among the medley of notes, but its low sweet song is to be heard at its best onlyin its alpine home. Nevertheless, as the kitemigrants shape their course for the northern woods,it is not uncommon to hear the males of a flockburst into song, &s if they really could not lie con-tent to remain silent any longer. When snow is onthe ground the juncos are often hard pushed forfood and on such occasions a flock will readily re-spond to an invitation to visit the dooryard anddine on table crumbs or small seeds of any kind. The junco is one of our most persistent grass andweed seed eaters-and in winter and spring seeds con-stitute much the greater part of its fare. Taking theyear around about, one-fourth of its food consists ofinsects, including leaf beetles, weevils, caterpillars, grasshoppers and many others. tSee Biol, Surv.°Bul. 15, pp. 80-82.)

Length, about 7\ inches. Tho glossy black colorand marked crest of the male and the brownishgray of the female, also crested, distinguish thisspecies. Range: Breeds from central California. Nevada,Utah, and southwestern Texas southward; wintersfrom southern California southward. Though a distant relative of the cedar bird, thephainopepla differs markedly from that species bothin appearance and habits. It is known to few, for itlives chiefly in the desert country of the southwest.though it is nut wholly a stranger in the parks andgardens of that region. When flying the white wing-patch becomes conspicuous and distinguishes thebird from all others. In the fall it is not unusual tofind it in loose flocks the members of which are drawntemporarily together, perhaps by the abundance ofsome favorite food. Like t
