DescriptionCommon Tern Nest with Five Eggs.jpg |
Five eggs is a pretty amazing number for a common tern. Normally, a full clutch is three, although a given tern may lay only two, and you do see a fair number of singles as you wander around, because the eggs are not laid all at once. Anyway, four is noteworthy enough to call out and tell everyone else what you've just found. Five is noteworthy enough that everyone who's nearby gathers to stare. Or, let's put it another way. Our team of fourteen people found and marked 4107 new nests in two days, and there were roughly 3000 previously-marked nests that we had to at least glance at as well, to see whether it was a full clutch and mark it off if so. Out of the 7000+ nests we saw over the weekend, only two had five eggs. I found this one; Charlie, an AMNH accountant out for the weekend, found the other. |
