Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Common Rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) Growing in the upper woodland at Green Bank Country Park.

Rhododendron ponticum is a common sight throughout parks and gardens across western Europe. The plants were introduced into Britain in the 1760s by Conrad Loddiges, the German born nurseryman who established rhubarb in this country as well. This species of Rhododendron became widely distributed through the commercial nursery trade in the late C18th and early c19th.

Its abundant seed production and its prolific suckering has led to it becoming an invasive species over much of western Europe and also in New Zealand. It is particularly problematical in the west highlands of Scotland and in Wales, and on heathlands in southern England, hindering the reproduction of the native flora. Rhododendron control, or rhodie-bashing as it is known, is a key element in nature conservation in these areas.
