Summary

[edit]
Description

A female common merganser on Seedskadee NWR. Common mergansers are frequently observed on the Green River through Seedskadee NWR. Common Mergansers usually nest in natural tree cavities or holes carved out by large woodpeckers. Sometimes mergansers take up residence in next boxes, provided the entrance hole is large enough. On occasion they use rock crevices, holes in the ground, or hollow logs. While the hens and their broods are quite visible, it is rare to ever find a merganser nest. Red side shiners, crayfish, and other baitfish provide the bulk of their diet on Seedskadee NWR.
