| Description | Now meet the Common Eland, the second largest antelope in Africa after the Giant Eland, and very similar to the Nilgai or blue bull of India. I managed just one distant shot of an Eland on my Kenya visit and was might pleased to view the animal this close. The common eland (Taurotragus oryx), also known as the southern eland or eland antelope, is a savannah and plains antelope found in East and Southern Africa. Mainly a herbivore, its diet is primarily grasses and leaves. Common elands form herds of up to 500 animals, but are not territorial. (Al Ain, UAE, Dec. 2012) |
