The fight now goes on around the twoprostrate captains. The active and sinewy Turk, making one last effort, turns and gets Decaturunder him. Drawing a knife from its sheath, he is about to bury it in the captains throat. But Decatur is as cool as he is valiant. Seizing the Turks uplifted arm with a grip like iron,he feels with his right hand for the pistol in his pocket. Quickly it is cocked, and, withoutdrawing it, Decatur aims and fires. The dagger drops from the Turks hand, and his body, limp and lifeless, rolls over on the deck. Another prize has been captured, and Decatur hasavenged his brothers death.
Text Appearing After Image:
Commodore Decatur fighting the Turk. Drawn by Merrill. The illustration which follows is for a song in Scotts Lady of the Lake : — THE LAY OF THE IMPRISONED HUNTSMAN. My hawk is tired of perch and hood,My idle greyhound loathes his food,My horse is weary of his stall,And I am sick of captive thrall.I wish I were as I have been,Hunting the hart in forest green,With bended bow and bloodhound free ;For thats the life is meet for me. I hate to learn the ebb of time. From yon dull steeples drowsy chime,Or mark it as the sunbeams crawl,Inch after inch, along the wall. The lark was wont my matins ring,The sable rook my vespers sing ;These towers, although a kings they be,Have not a hall of joy for me. 142 AMERICAN ART No more at dawning morn I rise,And sun myself in Ellens eyes,Drive the fleet deer the forest through,And homeward wend with evening dewA blithesome welcome blithely meet,And lay my trophies at her feet,While fled the eve on wing of glee, —That life is lost to love and me !
