Summary

[edit]
Description

This mother Black Teal (NZ Scaup) duck had been teaching her young to dive for food; then they decided to move on at great speed! The mother had just caught up in this shot.

NZ Scaup (Black Teal; Papango; Aythya novaeseelandie) are endemic throughout the main islands of New Zealand on freshwater lakes and ponds. They breed October to March with a nest of down-filled grass near water. They feed on small aquatic animals and seeds from the lake floor by diving to depths of up to two metres. Identified by their brown-black plumage and golden eye.
