s brave defenders, whose onlymonument the Alamo group now is. But let us still hope the sacred pile may be saved andstand. Its destruction would be a blot on the fair name ofthe city, the state and the nation that would be so supineas to permit it. Let it be taken from the custody of warringwomen. Place it in the hands of men sworn to restore it tothe same contour and condition as when the combat commencedthere that made it memorable. That won for its defendersimmortal fame. That made San Antonio the Mecca of manymillions who have come thither to worship at a shrine of suchchivalry. This grand pile has been the cause that has madeSan Antonio such a splendid city. It has brought her not onlyrenown, but untold wealth and to our state a vast and con-tinuous concourse. If any part of the venerable pile be permit-ted to be destroyed, possibly a Sampsonian fate may awaitthose who wantonly destroy such a peerless place and pile.Let the state, the nation if not the city, truly save the Alamo.

Combats and Conquests of Immortal Heroes 27CHAPTER III DAUNTLESS DEFENSE AND DREADFUL DESTRUCTION OF THE immortal ALAMO The story of the Alamo is written in blood. That bloodwas the life current of nearly 200 martyrs. It was the sacri-fice offered upon the sacred shrine of liberty. There are morethan a million who have made San Antonio their Mecca. Theycame to pay their tribute to the heroes who fell and were glori-fied there. Of these men of immortal fame were the braveBowie and Bonham, the courageous Crokett, the undauntedTravis and their handful of unfaltering followers. Their exactnumber was one hundred and seventy nine. They made their most memorable struggle against the over-whelming odds of more than six thousand trained Mexicantroops. The latter were led and directed by the dictator, SantaAnna. He commenced the siege of the Constitutionalistsin the Alamo on Wednesday morning February 22, 1836. SantaAnna then sent a messenger to the commander, LieutenantColonel William Barrett
