This was hardly half the number whom he had killedsoon after Arredondo entered the city. Here he took overthree hundred male prisoners and quite a large number offemale ones. The entire 300 males he packed closely into asingle structure. They were so densely squeezed thereinthat 18 of them perished the first night of incarceration. Thebalance were tried and executed in coteries from a dozen totwenty, the method of their trial and execution being identicalwith that of the 175 slain on the Medina River. The women were not slaughtered. They, however, weresubjected to all manner of indignities and to shameful con-tumely.
