Description

Potsdamer Platz Berlin <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbushaus" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbushaus</a> shortly after completion. The Verkhehrsturm is in situ Nr 191 Verlag Georg Stilke, Berlin NW7 Posted to Chemnitz on 21 May 1933 This is an early view, because the Palast Hotel Bellevue <a href="http://www.weimarberlin.com/2021/07/hotel-bellevue-on-potsdamer-platz.html" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.weimarberlin.com/2021/07/hotel-bellevue-on-potsdamer-...</a>

occupied this site until 1928 and the new building was completed in Spring 1932, when this photo would have been taken, awaiting tenants.

The name of the architect, Erich Mendelsohn, is visible on both sides above the ground floor, also <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyckerhoff_&_Widmann" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Dyckerhoff & Widmann</a> a construction firm specialising in concrete and more prominently, <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boswau_&_Knauer" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Boswau u Knauer.</a> another concern specialising in reinforced concrete buildings, but also known for building some of the classical late 19th century hotels in Berlin. The Columbushaus had a steel skeleton which enabled it to survive wartime bombing to a large extent. On the left, the Cafe Josty, which closed in 1930.

Before 1936, the offices of the Propaganda Ausschuss for the Olympic Games were located here.
