English: [The Circus House can barely be seen, through the trees towards the center of the photograph.]
"Photograph taken in Columbus, Ohio c. 1897. "A view of the west lake in Goodale Park, featuring the boathouse. The lake was installed in 1891. Construction of the boathouse, which also served as a refreshment place and veranda, took place in 1895. The lake was removed in 1953. On July 14, 1851, Dr. Lincoln Goodale donated nearly 40 acres of land off Goodale Street with specific requirements in the deed stating that the land “shall be forever kept and preserved as a public park, or pleasure ground, for the free and common use”. In 1805 Dr. Goodale moved to Franklinton, Ohio and at the age of 23 became the areas first physician. He also opened a pharmacy, and later used the profit to purchase real estate. He enlisted in the war of 1812 and after which he moved into Columbus and opened L. Goodale & Co. which was a dry goods store. Dr. Goodale also held political offices in Columbus, city councilmen and city recorder. Goodale Park served as Camp Jackson (April 18-June 4, 1861) during the Civil War."" |
