English: Ground-breaking for Court 6, a 20,000-niche columbarium in Section 70 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. This ground-breaking occurred on November 30, 2011. Officials presiding over the ground-breaking are, from left to right: Max Cleland, Arlington National Cemetery Advisory Commission member; John McHugh, Secretary of the Army; Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.); Scott Forrester, president of Forrester Construction Company; Reginald Johnson, Arlington National Cemetery worker; and Colonel Victoria Bruzese, chief engineer, Arlington National Cemetery.
The columbarium will be the ninth at the cemetery. Construction began in January 2012 and is expected to be complete in June 2013. At 20,000 niches, it will be nearly two-and-a-half times the size of the next largest columbarium, which contains 8,000 niches. The ninth columbarium will be 540 feet (160 m) long, 116 feet (35 m) wide, and 11 feet (3.4 m) high. Arlington National Cemetery officials, reacting to a mismanagement scandal that occurred broke in 2009, recovered $26.7 million in undisbursed funds between 2010 and 2012. A portion of these funds were used to fully fund the construction of the ninth columbarium. |
