Materia e tecnica: olio su tela

Misure: 410 mm x 480 mm

Notizie storico-critiche: Per casa Grande dei Giovio in Como si intende quella corrispondente oggi ai nn.107 e 109 di via V.Emanuele. Qui il dipinto rimase fino al 1846 quando l'ultimo discendente Giovio, Paolo, vendette l'immobile a Pietro Baragiola, e divise tra le sue figlie e nipoti la collezione di ritratti.cfr. R.Pavoni, 1983, pp.38 e 44. Del dipinto esistono varie copie: quella degli Uffizi realizzata da Cristofano degli Altissimi (lettera del 23-10-1556 in M.Gualandi, 1884, pp.371-374); quella al Kunst di Vienna; una alla Biblioteca Nazionale di Madrid; un dipinto su tavola al Museo Navale di Pegli, attribuito a Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio; un ritratto nella Sala del Mappamondo nel Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola (1573-74); la tavola di Crispin de Pan (Effigies regum ac principum, Colonia, 1598). Esistono anche due incisioni, quella dello Stimmer e quella del Capriolo (Ritratti di 100 capitani illustri, Roma, 1596). Per tutte queste informazioni cfr.
