renders it of course local, but in aquatic situations it isoften found in great plenty. Along the banks of the Thamesthat border the opposite counties of Surrey and Middlesex,this species is very common, and, no doubt, equally so inmany similar localities. In the southern parts of England,we have no doubt that the Reed Bunting is resident through-out the year : and we are not aware that it abounds more atone season than another. At all periods, this species may befound, as before observed, on the banks of the Thames andits tributary streams ; and we have seldom observed a nest ofthis species many yards from water of some description. Inthe small islands along the Thames appropriated as osiergrounds, Reed Buntings abound in summer, and such placesare, in the months of April and May, alive with these birds.In passing through them the birds are roused from their nests,and, springing up, cling among the slender stems of theosiers, flitting from one to another in anxious alarm. ■■: REED BUNTING. 57 sit in a very upright position, swinging upon their thin stems orthe still more slender reeds, their light weight causing them tobend, under them; and they continually expand and close thefeathers of their tails by a very quick lateral motion. Theirflight is even and. rapid, and. performed in a straight line,opening and shutting their wings from time to time. Whenexcited, this little bird erects the feathers of its head so thatthe black part appears only to reach the centre of the crown,the whole hinder part of the head being white. Their note,when under anxiety for their nestlings, is sherrip! pro-nounced quickly. It is to be presumed that much of their own food in sum-mer, as well as that of their young, consists of aquatic in-sects ; and it is also probable, that insects constitute thechief part of their subsistence even during winter, as theymay be observed at that season to resort, in company withthe wagtails, to the river side, where, running along the s
